Čiurlioniada: Piano Music Evening | "New Collection of Lithuanian Piano Works"

Image description

On October 1st, to mark International Music Day, the "New Collection of Lithuanian Piano Works" will be presented at the Organum Concert Hall.

This two-part publication brings together newly edited works by famous Lithuanian composers, written between 1972- 2023 for the International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano Competition. According to the collection’s editor Indrė Baikštytė, the aim of this release is "both to enrich the repertoire of Lithuanian piano music with the pieces already favoured by the audiences as well as to publish works which have been forgotten and never published before."

The concert will feature performances from both volumes of the collection, which will be given by participants and laureates of the International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano Competition: Elžbieta Liepa Dvarionaitė, Julian Germanovič, Anastasija Šumskaitė, Neringa Valuntonytė, and Kamilė Zaveckaitė. This concert is an opportunity to hear how Lithuanian composers of different generations enter into a musical dialogue with M. K. Čiurlionis while interpreting, extending, or reimagining the worlds of his creative work. In the programme – pieces by V. Bartulis, R. Šerkšnytė, Ž. Martinaitytė, A. Šenderovas, K. Bieliukas, and other composers.

This event is part of the concert series "Čiurlioniada. Piano and Organ Music Evenings". On this special occasion, the Center for International Cultural Projects has invited special guests and jury members, laureates of the various editions of the International M. K. Čiurlionis Organ and Piano Competition to the Lithuanian capital. In addition to the composer's own organ and piano works, the program of the cycle will also include premieres of the pieces inspired by Čiurlionis's legacy, explications of the fragments or just the themes left, improvisations, newly prepared and previously created arrangements, and the work of contemporaries.

Project is partly sponsored by: Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian Council for Culture, Vilnius City Municipality.
